Praying Mantises are wonderful insects. We have had pet ones for nearly a year since we found one on our front door. They are extremely curious, not scared of humans, and pretty much harmless (one of them did try to attack me when I hadn’t fed it enough but it was more cute than anything else) so much that my wife and daughters really are happy to have them wander around on their hands and arms.

When I was in grade 4, I found a preying mantis on an extremely windy day on the playground of the community center. I didn’t feel it belonged in the playground and gently got it to crawl on my bare hand. I used my free hand to block the wind as best I could and it held onto my finger with it’s claws. I got it safely to a field of long grass and let it go. Never even tried to hurt me. Will never forget that encounter.

I’ve picked up a mantis before, I was surprised how sharp it’s front legs were! I teach preschoolers, and they’d found it on the playground, so I wanted to move it quickly before they accidentally hurt it, while also giving them a chance to look at it beyond their reach. I picked it up by it’s thorax and the poor thing probably thought my hand was some kind of weird bird, it reached back over its head to my fingers and started poking, I was so surprised that I dropped it. Thankfully it was fine and I got it away safely.
